Miguel Andujar Comes Out of Nowhere to Give Encouraging Injury Update
By Michael Luciano
After hiding in the shadows for the better part of the 2019 season due to a torn labrum, Yankees third baseman Miguel Andujar on the comeback trail.
Andujar, who is currently on the 60-day IL as he recovers from a torn labrum in his shoulder, will start resuming baseball activities Monday and asserts that he'll be 100 percent for the upcoming 2020 season.
Andujar has missed all but 12 games this year for the Yankees, and has since watched DJ LeMahieu and Gio Urshela flourish in his spot. In those 12 games, he hit went a paltry 6-47 (all singles), good for a .128 average, with just one RBI. His OPS was .271, and his OPS+ was -26. Keep in mind, 100 is average.
It's certainly a far cry from 2018, in which he finished second in the Rookie of the Year voting behind Shohei Ohtani. He slashed .297/.527/.855 with 27 home runs, 47 doubles, and 92 RBIs.
While most believe the third base job is Urshela's to lose, Andujar is insisting that he isn't focused on any sort of competition just yet.
It remains to be seen if Andujar has been Wally Pipp'd by Urshela or if he can rediscover the power stroke that made him such a deadly hitter and wrestle the job back.
