VIDEO: Miguel Andujar Spotted Learning First Base From Tino Martinez and Luke Voit at Closed Yankees Practice
By Michael Luciano
Even after picking up just six hits in 47 at bats last season, while battling a devastating shoulder tear that very obviously required surgery, Miguel Andujar remains a treasured commodity for the New York Yankees. With third base having been stolen from him due to Gio Urshela's hot bat and his own unwatchable defense, the Yankees have tried to get Andujar some experience at first base, even bringing in former Yankees star Tino Martinez to help Andujar acclimate to the new position. Who better to learn from?
Andujar has also put in some work as a corner outfielder of late.
Andujar was almost the Rookie of the Year in 2018, hitting 27 home runs in his first year in the big leagues while just barely losing out to Shohei Ohtani. He couldn't hit a beach ball last season while battling shoulder pain and fatigue, but the Yankees and Andujar himself have seemingly put any memory of that lost season to rest as they start fresh in 2020.
Even after the unbridled nightmare that was 2019, the Yankees are too enticed by Andujar's bat to keep him off the roster. If trying to get him more at-bats involves sticking him in first base or left field, Aaron Boone seems willing to do that.
