Mike D'Antoni Ending Extension Talks With Rockets May Indicate Team is About to Make Serious Moves
By Jerry Trotta
Are the Houston Rockets on the brink of making some major roster moves? We'd like to think so.
General manager Darly Morey has already come out and stated that everybody on the current roster -- except James Harden, it must be presumed -- and current draft picks are disposable. Yes, that includes cornerstone pieces like Chris Paul, Eric Gordon, and Clint Capela.
On top of it all, head coach Mike D'Antonio stated on Thursday that he ended contract extension talks with the franchise, a reality that practically nobody saw coming when you consider the amount of winning he's done since taking over the position in 2016. Lest we forget, he was named the 2016-17 NBA Coach of the Year.
D'Antoni recently stated that he hoped to coach for at least three more seasons, but why would he commit to a franchise that is now at least willing to entertain blowing up a championship-caliber roster?
His abrupt decision to end talks about an extension should hint to basketball junkies that Houston is on the verge of potentially tearing things down and shutting their own NBA title window voluntarily.
And who's to say that Morey isn't inclined to deal the reigning MVP of the league? If anyone is capable of bringing himself do to it, it's him, after all.
Ask yourself this: if Morey came out and said that the Rockets are going to run it back with their same core for another two or three years, why wouldn't D'Antoni sign an extension? It's particularly clear what this team's ceiling is given its current makeup.
In so many ways, Houston appears at the precipice of major change. And their head coach is making the right call in refusing to commit in the long term.
