Mike McCarthy Admits Lying to Jerry Jones in Order to Seal the Deal in Dallas
By Jerry Trotta
Mike McCarthy's introductory press conference as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys was comprised of laughter and moments of awkwardness.
Apparently, it also featured a bit of deception.
During the interview process, McCarthy allegedly told Jerry Jones that he watched every play of the 2019 season. The former Packers HC later confessed that...wasn't the case. He just really wanted the gig!
Lucky for McCarthy, the press room broke out in laughter following this revelation. After the noise died down, however, he elaborated on what he originally meant.
"It was more about tracking the trends and seeing what people were doing," said the former Super Bowl champ. "And a big part of it, too, was watching players, watching some of these new offenses, really a couple of guys on defense we were able to study."
Are we surprised? Watching every play of a random team's 16-game season -- even for a football junkie as significant as McCarthy -- is preposterous.
Hopefully Jones comprehended that McCarthy was misleading him in order to convey his desire to land the job.
After all, Jones apparently knew McCarthy well enough to have him stay over at his house over the weekend, a few days before the news broke that he got the job.
Whatever the case, McCarthy deploying a bit of duplicity to convey his desire to land the job should win over a decent number of naysayers amongst the Cowboys fan base.
