Miles Sanders Makes Strong Statement About Increased Role in 2020
By Jerry Trotta
While Jordan Howard was sidelined with a stinger last season, rookie running back Miles Sanders burst onto the scene and showed that he was worthy of being drafted in the second round (No. 53 overall) of the 2019 Draft.
Prior to that, the former Penn State star really only saw work in obvious passing situations or when Howard needed a breather. As we know, the latter signed with the Miami Dolphins this offseason, leaving Sanders poised for a breakout sophomore campaign.
The 23-year-old recently spoke on the increased workload he expects to receive, and his comments should excite Eagles fans.
"I believe that's why they drafted me in the first place," Sanders told SiriusXM NFL Radio. "It was really just a switch, honestly, that turned. All of a sudden, I was a starting running back, and I didn't start at the beginning of the season. So, I just looked at it as an opportunity, and I just attacked it."
Despite the rumors that the Eagles are interested in adding more depth at the position, this is shaping up to be Sanders' backfield. That's without a doubt the right move, as the former Nittany Lion totaled 818 yards and three touchdowns on the ground while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He added 50 receptions for 509 yards and three scores in the passing game.
Sanders definitely needs to improve as a blocker, but he flashed enough potential in that department in Year 1 to the point where head coach Doug Pederson should feel confident in deploying him as a three-down RB in 2020.
