Brewers Have Reportedly Joined Didi Gregorius Sweepstakes
The 2019 Milwaukee Brewers were a quality team, winning 89 games and losing to the eventual World Series champion Washington Nationals in the NL Wild Card game. However, the team has now lost 14 of its players from this past season already, and if they want to be able to compete for this year's title, they need to sign some solid free agents and bolster their ranks.
The Brew Crew has been hard at work doing just that, trying to attract some of the bigger names on the MLB free agent market, one of them is reportedly being Didi Gregorius. The Yankees decided to not to extend him a qualifying offer, feeling that they have better and cheaper players that warrant more playing time than Sir Didi.
Gregorius has posted four impressive seasons with the Yankees, averaging 20 home runs and 75 RBIs a year from 2015-2018. However, his 2019 season was a disappointment, batting only .238, and only playing in 82 games due to injuries.
The Cincinnati Reds, the franchise Gregorius started his career with, have also shown interest in the free-agent shortstop, so the Brewers may have to offer Gregorius a larger contract than they may like in order to insure he'd pick them. Many other teams are expected to bid for his services, including the Philadelphia Phillies.
If Gregorius is able to return to his pre-injury form, giving a player of his caliber for no more than $15 million per year is a steal for a team who is in win-now mode.
