Minnesota Gophers Football Will No Longer Use Minneapolis PD at Games Following Death of George Floyd
Throughout the week, citizens across the United States have grown increasingly disgusted with the horrific video of Minneapolis police arresting -- and eventually killing -- George Floyd. The clip shows an officer kneeling on Floyd's neck for minutes while he's saying he can't breathe. Floyd, unfortunately, ended up passing away and all four officers involved in the situation have been fired and the city's mayor has called for them to be charged.
With serious charges looming for those officers, there's a proverbial black eye on the entire police department right now, and it's only getting worse. On Wednesday night, the University of Minnesota decided to make big changes between the two parties, and the school will no longer staff MPD officers as extra security for home football games.
Can you blame the university's administration for this move? Absolutely not.
The acts of violence and disregard for Floyd's safety in the viral clip are nauseating to watch. And all because a worker at a store claimed Floyd had provided a bad check? Disgusting. How can the university trust the police department now, especially with students and fans of color?
University president Joan Gabel made her feelings clear in the release sent out above. She's putting her students, faculty and UM community first.
