Latest Report Suggests Vikings Have Done a Complete 180 on Anthony Harris
By Thomas Carannante
The Minnesota Vikings' offseason was turned upside down ever since they signed Kirk Cousins to a contract extension. Nothing has gone as planned.
One of the bigger issues has been the situation surrounding Anthony Harris, who was initially franchised-tagged with the belief he'd be traded to another team. He carries an $11.4 million cap hit for the 2020 season, which posed an issue for the Vikings' offseason blueprint.
They've been unable to find a trade partner, and now it appears as if the front office is going to keep him -- and even consider inking him to an extension!
This wouldn't be a bad idea by any means, but it certainly wasn't a part of the team's original plan. This is the smart decision, though. There's no sense in keeping a disgruntled player on the roster for one year before he hits free agency. Give the man an extension if you can't trade him.
Even better news? He prefers to stay with the Vikings! That should make it easier. On top of that, the front office's strategy here will work out for 2020 and beyond, it seems.
"Such a deal not only could keep Harris happy and lock him up beyond 2020, it also could lower his salary-cap number for 2020, with the Vikings able to push some money into future seasons," wrote insider Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press. "Harris wants a contract that puts him among the highest-paid safeties in the NFL. That could be an average of about $14 million per season."
The Vikings are trying to make the best of this bizarre situation, and it seems a resolution could be reached soon that benefits both parties.
