MLB Announces Jake Marisnick Suspension for Collision With Jonathan Lucroy
By Michael Luciano
Houston Astros outfielder Jake Marsinick's decision to lower his shoulder and barrel over Los Angeles Angels catcher Jonathan Lucroy was met with a lot of differing opinions on social media, as fans and players weighed in on the brutal collision at home plate.
Marisnick will be suspended two games after giving Lucroy a concussion, which will leave the 33-year-old catcher out for an unspecified length of time.
While it's still up for debate if Marisnick was intentionally trying to collide with Lucroy on the play in question, Joe Torre still found it dangerous enough to warrant some sort of punishment.
Marisnick, who claimed the incident was accidental could still appeal this suspension, though it's unclear if he plans to do so.
After Buster Posey was nearly decapitated in 2011, the league has made several steps with regards to protecting catchers from baserunners charging towards home. As much as the old-timers might enjoy seeing Pete Rose separating Ray Fosse's shoulder at home plate in the All-Star game, this push for safety looks like the right move.
While the Astros might lose their fourth outfielder for a few games, the Angels lost their starting catcher for the foreseeable future thanks to Marisnick's hit that is borderline legal in football, let alone baseball.
