MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred Makes Incredible Gesture to Help Pay League Employees Through May 31
For all you fans still down in the dumps over play being suspended, this latest update from Major League Baseball should warm your hearts and bring a smile to your face. With financial instability haunting our nation during the COVID-19 pandemic, you're seeing countless folks lose their jobs.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred understands the obstacles everyone in the league is facing, which is why he's stepping up and making sure he's taking care of his own. Yup, Manfred announced he and senior staff members of MLB will be taking a 35% pay cut for the rest of 2020 to make sure everyone can be paid through at least the next two months.
Say what you want about Manfred, who makes around $11 million a season, per the Chicago Tribune, but it doesn't get much classier than this. In that same memo, MLB insider Jeff Passan noted the league still intends to make the scheduled payments to every single team in order to help them pay their players' salaries.
That sum is north of $170 million.
The status of the 2020 campaign remains up in the air, although ideas like playing overseas have been mentioned. Nonetheless, Manfred is being proactive with his latest plan to help out all of his employees. It's a generous move, and one thousands out there will surely appreciate.
