MLB GMs Will Reportedly Meet About Moving Trade Deadline to August 15
By Max Scoli
In light of "slow activity" prior to the MLB trade deadline, it appears those who run the actual show are hoping for some changes.
According to reports, the league's GMs are eager to push the deadline back, stating that they need more time to come up with their respective organizational strategies.
The fact that this request will be brought in front of all the GMs is significant to say the least, suggesting that there's enough support already behind it. It's also surprising because the deadline already occurs nearly 110 games into the season, which is WELL past the halfway point.
What about this strategy, though?
How about instead MLB teams just sign more players in the offseason instead of having stars like Dallas Keuchel and Craig Kimbrel go without a team until a few months into the regular season?
Additionally, there have been three significant trades in the last 48 hours, one of which included an All-Star, so while it's probably not as active as some had hoped, it's definitely not barren.
Here's what's gone down:
- Miami Marlins traded RHP Sergio Romo, RHP Chris Vallimont, and a PTBNL to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for 1B Lewin Diaz.
- Kansas City Royals trade LHP Jake Diekman to the Oakland Athletics for OF Dairon Blanco and RHP Ismael Aquino.
- Toronto Blue Jays trade RHP Marcus Stroman to the New York Mets for pitching prospects Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods-Richardson.
The wild card race certainly complicates things in terms of contention, but the goal should be to win no matter what instead of waiting for a better opportunity to have a fire sale or to finally pull the trigger on a deal that will benefit your team.
