MLB Insider Jeff Passan Calls Out Gary Sanchez's Blocking in Bizarre Tweet
By Chris Pyo
It's safe to say that ESPN baseball insider Jeff Passan hasn't caught too many games behind the plate at any level. And if he has, then he hasn't ever had the opportunity to block a Zack Britton sinker.
During the New York Yankees' Game 4 ALCS loss to the Houston Astros, Passan stayed mum on the numerous issues that plagued the Yanks in this one, but chose to call out Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez for not blocking a couple of utterly spiked Britton pitches, putting the onus on one of the Yanks' easiest targets.
Any Yankee fan can admit that Sanchez's defense is often suspect; there's no defending that. However, it's a little difficult for any catcher to block two horrid sinkers, dropped five full feet in front of the plater, under any circumstances.
Britton's pitch doesn't even reach home plate before it kicks up awkwardly and launches into the stratosphere. He missed his spot by so much that anyone not named Yadier Molina would've had an impossible time blocking that.
Passan's just harping on Sanchez's perceived lack of hustle behind the plate, and while that might be justified on other occasions, there's no shot that Sanchez is to blame for that ball making its way to the backstop.
It didn't much matter anyway, as Sanchez went 0-4 at the plate and didn't contribute anything else on the evening. Maybe Passan will join the Bleacher Creatures in calling for Austin Romine.
