MLB Insider Peter Gammons Insists Clint Frazier-Robbie Ray Trade Gaining Steam
By Adam Weinrib
Yankee fans have been prepared to say goodbye to power-hitting outfielder Clint Frazier for months now, but perhaps not in a package like this.
Based on what we're hearing, it seems as if keeping Frazier's on the low end of the team's priorities, and though they've been significantly hugging other prospects in their arsenal, like Deivi Garcia, Frazier's inclusion seems to be the bare minimum in any deal for an arm.
Enter Peter Gammons, who says he's heard repeatedly that Clint Frazier could head to Arizona for Robbie Ray or reliever Archie Bradley, and the deal could expand to include both D-Backs and more Yankees prospect capital.
Frazier headlining a package for the strikeout artist Ray would be a bit of a tough pill to swallow (Ray's control is iffy, though he has whiffed 173 in 129 innings), but seems to be the cost of doing business. Frazier for a high-variance reliever in Bradley seems semi-ridiculous, and New York fans better hope that any Bradley deal includes Arizona's starter, too.
Frazier hit .283 with 11 homers and 34 RBI at the big league level in the Bronx this year, but soured many on his Yankees future with a disastrous game in the field against Boston (one of many), after which he refused to answer questions or apologize for days after the fact. He's been stuck at Triple-A Scranton for several weeks now, with no end in sight, and caused more controversy when he was slow to report for the assignment.
Frazier's the player everyone wants to get their hands on for cheap right about now; it seems he holds less value to the Yankees than most other teams. Imagine if he finally gets recalled to the Bronx, but it's as a member of the Diamondbacks in the next two days?
