MLB Playoff Picture for Week of Sept. 23
By Parker White
One more week. This is the final week of regular season baseball before the postseason, and while plenty of teams have clinched, there are still some divisions and Wild Card spots yet to be determined.
Here is MLB's playoff picture for the week of Sept. 23.
American League East
The New York Yankees, who have been in control of this division seemingly all season, clinched the AL East last week. The only thing they're playing for is home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, and they enter Monday one game behind the Houston Astros in the loss column.
American League Central
The Cleveland Indians put some pressure on the Minnesota Twins a while back, but the Twinkies have a four-game lead heading into the final week. Outside of a collapse from Minnesota, the Indians will have their sights set on the Wild Card.
American League West
It was party time in Houston on Sunday, as the favorites to win it all clinched the AL West. Oakland put some pressure on them, but the 94-win A's are currently eight games back.
American League Wild Card
The AL Wild Card will be very interesting over these seven days, as the Athletics are currently in the top WC spot with a two-game lead, followed by the Indians and Tampa Bay Rays tied for the second spot. These three teams will be battling it out for two spots. A 92-plus win team will be going home without a playoff berth. Ouch.
National League East
Even though the Atlanta Braves came into the season as the defending East champs, nobody picked them and they defied the odds, clinching the division on Friday against the Giants. This was supposed to be a three- or four-team race, but Atlanta has been in control for months now and the Braves locked it up at SunTrust Park this past weekend.
National League Central
The St. Louis Cardinals gave themselves some nice wiggle room in the division, as they swept the Chicago Cubs in a four-game series and lead the Milwaukee Brewers by three games.
National League West
Nothing much to say here. The Los Angeles Dodgers clinched a couple weeks ago and the next best team is still a whopping 20 games back. Oh, and they've won 100 games despite nobody in the division pushing them.
National League Wild Card
At this time last week, it looked like both NL Wild Card spots might come down to the last day. Well, fast forward to present day and the Washington Nationals and Brewers are tied for the top spot, while the Cubs are four games back. Outside of a late push, the only thing left to be decided is who will host the Wild Card Game between Washington and Milwaukee.
