Game 3 of the ALCS was forced into an abrupt delay in the top of the fifth inning when home plate umpire Jeff Nelson signaled to the rest of his crew that he needed to be removed from the game.

Nelson was the victim of taking two foul balls of his face mask during the contest's first four innings, and was visibly feeling the effects before the fifth frame, resulting in roughly a 20 minute delay while second base ump Kerwin Danley shifted from second to behind the dish.

As it turns out, Nelson was right to remove himself, as Bryan Hoch of MLB.com has disclosed that the 54-year-old was diagnosed with a concussion upon receiving treatment.

Baseball fans around the world, and especially at Yankee Stadium, were markedly disturbed that the clash went into such a lengthy delay, as they worried the stoppage would hinder the effectiveness of starters Luis Severino and Gerritt Cole, failing to recognize that Nelson was in palpable pain.

Emotions always run high during the postseason, but the health of Nelson should have been the primary concern amongst those watching.

It might've been helpful for the reasoning behind the delay to have been announced during the game, to those within the stadium's walls.

Let's hope that the veteran ump isn't shelved for too long and is able to return to the diamond in time for Game 4.
