MLB Finally Releases Statement on George Floyd's Death After Very Long Delay
By Michael Luciano
After a week of protests following the death of George Floyd, the MLB has finally released a statement that affirmed their desire to foster peace in a fractured society.
MLB's statement started with condolences to the families of Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, and Breonna Taylor, though it did not specify who was at fault for their death. The league confirmed their zero tolerance policy on racism and racial injustice while committing to "engaging in our communities to invoke change."
This is certainly better than the statements made by some teams (looking at you, Washington Nationals) given how they were more direct in confronting the issue of racial injustice.
Some took issue with the league's statement, though. Not only did it take the league a full week after Floyd's death to issue any sort of statement, but it failed to mention the Black Lives Matter movement or the protests across the country.
MLB's statement might not have satisfied all parties, and it came in way too late given how long these protests have been going on, but the fact that they did acknowledge the systemic prejudice in this country and vowed to be a catalyst for change deserves at least some praise.
