MLB Reportedly Floated Playing World Series at Neutral Site Like Miami if Necessary
By Sam Dunn
Major League Baseball is in limbo right now, with Spring Training activities suspended across the board and Opening Day currently pushed back for a minimum of two weeks. The league is very much committed to playing out a full 162-game regular season, however, and is prepared to get creative in accomplishing that goal if the season ends up getting delayed substantially.
In fact, MLB insider Craig Mish reports that at least one voice inside the league floated the idea of moving the World Series to a warm-weather neutral site if the postseason carries on deep into November or perhaps beyond... like Marlins Park in Miami!
That's almost impossible to fathom, and it must be noted that this idea still effectively remains far outside the realm of possibility. But the fact that it was voiced at all in legitimate discussions is worth appreciating.
And not for nothing, the idea of a home field advantage in the World Series was wiped away after the Nationals just prevailed in a seven-game Fall Classic over the Astros in which the road team won every single game.
There's something to be said for rewarding players with a trip to Miami for the culmination of baseball's annual calendar, but robbing two respective venues of the lucrative opportunities that come with hosting the World Series would be met with incredible resistance. Still, this fascinating wrinkle provides a window into the state of the MLB's attempts to reckon with COVID-19's influence on the league calendar.
