MLB Rumor Tracker for 2019 Winter Meetings
By Adam Weinrib
With the Winter Meetings nearly upon us after a long month (that's all it's been!) without baseball, it appears teams are ready to execute a few moving parts. We've already seen Mike Moustakas and a cadre of Braves relievers make things official well ahead of Hot Stove Season, and now we're nearly ready to see several more All-Stars jump ship. Here's where the rumors stand, to be updated daily as the meetings proceed.
Zack Wheeler Rumors - Rangers and White Sox Lead?
Wheeler could very well be the first domino to fall -- if he can out-sprint Anthony Rendon to get a deal done.
Per reports, he's in heavy negotiations ahead of the meetings, and tops Chicago's wish list, while also remaining a potential target of the Texas Rangers to front their big, shiny new rotation in an all-new Globe Life Field. Wherever he goes, it's gonna cost 'em.
Anthony Rendon Rumors - Rangers to Strike Fast?
It appears Rendon will be the first of the "big three" FAs to sign on the dotted line, already having met with his "hometown" Rangers and the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have some calculated decisions to make about Gerrit Cole.
Executives seem to believe Rendon could announce quickly at the Winter Meetings, and the Texas-based team appears to be the favorite.
Yankees Rumors - Gerrit Cole and Stephen Strasburg Meetings?
We'll keep this brief -- we have nothing to report beyond meetings and rumblings, but the Yankees are clearly going harder after Cole than anyone in recent years. They've met with him on Tuesday, bringing their new pitching coach and guru Matt Blake in for the visit.
The Strasburg meeting is set for Wednesday.
Unlike 2018, when the Yankees made Manny Machado and Patrick Corbin come to them, this pursuit has legs. Whether Cole will abandon his West Coast dreams for the Bronx remains another story.
