MLB Trade Deadline Rumors: Cubs

The Chicago Cubs are currently sitting pretty atop the NL Central with a 51-44 record. While some would constitute this as a success, the Cubbies are still looking to improve in an effort to compete for a World Series.

At this point, several NL teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves are more equipped for a postseason run, so Chicago will have to make some moves to once again place them in a position of relevance.

One name that has come up as a possible target is Kansas City Royals 2B Whit Merrifield.

While trading for him would likely cost a pretty penny, the Cubs are in the market for a productive veteran presence on the offensive end, and Merrifield fits that bill. Already short in depth at his position, the Cubs could really use a guy who is hitting .311 with 12 homers and 47 RBI.

Another player who would make sense for the Cubs is Giants closer Will Smith.

Joe Maddon has expressed his interest in bringing in a solid lefty reliever, and there is no better left-handed pitcher who has been made available in trade talks than Smith.

So far this season, Smith has been one of the MLB's top relief pitchers, sporting a 2.75 ERA to go along with 24 saves in 26 attempts.

The Chicago Cubs need to make a deal, and the question remains: Are they willing to mortgage what semblance of a future they have to maximize their win-now window?

We will find out on July 31.
