This Mock-Up of an NFL 'COVID Helmet' Looks Straight Out of Halo
By Scott Rogust
Professional sports leagues like the NBA and NHL have received the green light to return to action amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. The NFL has expressed confidence in their ability to start their upcoming season, but many were wondering how they'll be able to prevent the potential spread of COVID-19 on the field.
Well, this...could...be part of the equation? Fans have already seen a mockup of a helmet encased in polycarbonate, which was universally ridiculed by some of the league's biggest stars. On Wednesday, Stadium revealed their model of the potential "COVID-19 Helmets," and they look straight out the Halo video game franchise.
NFL players are gong to look like Master Chief staring down members of the villainous Covenant. Quite frankly, they look awesome. However, we don't know if the helmets are practical, due to the lack of airflow.
Of course, COVID-19 can be contracted by exposure to droplets in the air. That's why health experts have recommended wearing masks in public places where social distancing can't be practiced. During an appearance on Adam Schefter's podcast last month, NFL Players Association medical director Thom Mayer revealed that the league is working with Oakley on a prototype for a modified face mask to prevent the spread of the virus.
We should get a better idea of what the helmets will look like once we get closer to the start of training camp. If the NFL chooses this design displayed by Stadium, the likes of Khalil Mack and JJ Watt are going to look even more terrifying when they rush the quarterback off the edge.
