Mookie Wilson Releases Statement on Passing of Bill Buckner
By Zack Jiang
In the same way Bill Buckner was blamed for the botched grounder in the 1986 World Series, Mookie Wilson will always be remembered as the hero who hit it. In the wake of Buckner's passing, Wilson released a statement on the friendship they've developed throughout the years.
In his statement, Wilson described the amazing relationship he grew with Buckner that lasted for decades, while praising him as a player, too. He also emphasized that Buckner should not be judged by one play.
As Wilson stated, it's unfair to judge Buckner by one prominent mistake he made in his career. He went on to have a terrific 22-year career, nothing 2,715 hits and 174 home runs. He never struck out three times in a single game...ever. We could go on.
Buckner fully owned up to the play, despite the unfair criticisms. The negative attention he received is one of the ugly sides of sports, where people cross a line beyond passion. Thankfully, he was given a standing ovation when he signed with the Red Sox in 1990, and again in 2005 after Boston's World Series victory temporarily erased years of heartbreak.
Many friends and former teammates of Buckner have paid tribute to him, telling people what a great man he was. Although his botched play will always remain a prominent moment, hopefully, as Wilson wishes, it isn't what he is remembered for.
