The Most Grossly Overrated NL Teams Heading Into the 2020 Season
By Tyler Kemp
It is never too early to determine who is a contender and pretender in the National League. Each division has multiple teams that can make a playoff run, but there are a few that teams need to beware of earning too much hype. Here are the most overrated teams in the NL.
3. Cincinnati Reds
The Reds are in an interesting spot, as young team with a lot of talent, but a lot of banged up talent. There are question marks all over the place with players like Eugenio Suarez and Nick Senzel both dealing with offseason surgeries. In addition, being in the NL Central with the Cardinals, Brewers and Cubs does not help their case. Expectations are high in Cincy, but they need to be tamed.
2. Chicago Cubs
Chicago had a solid season in 2019, but it was not good enough to steal a Wild Card spot from their division rivals in Milwaukee. This team has plenty of talent at the plate with Javier Báez, Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Schwarber, to name a few. The question with this team is how far can their pitching take them? St. Louis, and Milwaukee are not going to roll over, either.
1. New York Mets
This happens every year in Queens. The pitching rotation is set up to be one of the best in the league, but then someone seems to get hurt at the wrong time. Case in point, Noah Syndergaard. Thor was supposed to be the thunder to NL Cy Young Jacob DeGrom’s lightning, but Syndergaard will miss the season with Tommy John rehab, hurt in quarantine, highly under the radar. Offensively, has anyone heard from Yoenis Cepedes? He has been missing in action for the last few years. You can hype them up all you want, but this isn't happening.
