VIDEO: Nats' Reaction to Howie Kendrick's World Series Homer Feels Like a Sign From God About Astros' Cheating
By Brady Williams
In Game 7 of the 2019 World Series, the Washington Nationals found themselves down 2-0. Suddenly, in the top of the seventh with two runners on base, Howie Kendrick took one for a ride, and in a single swing he put his team ahead of the Houston Astros. It is and will likely remain one of the greatest moments in the history of elimination games, as it sparked the Nationals to come back and win it all for the first time in team history. It was made all the more sweet when news broke that the Astros had a history of cheating, cementing themselves as villains in the eyes of nearly every fan in baseball. And a review of the footage following Kendrick's fateful dinger shows that the celebrations make it all even better.
It's like we were supposed to know about the trashcan-banging all along. Just as the Nats began their final, decisive smackdown of baseball's bad guys, they celebrate with a move that's become a staple of Houston's modern legacy. Just like the aptly named "2020 Astros Shame Tour" Twitter account points out, hindsight makes the clues all the more obvious.
The play will remain a signature moment for a franchise that desperately needed success, and this new wrinkle just makes it even more fun to watch. After a season of trashcan banging yielded a loss, it's nice to know that even fate is mocking the Houston Astros.
