Nationals Should Fire Dave Martinez Following Sweep Against Mets
By Parker White
Coming into the week, you could've made the argument that New York Mets manager Mickey Callaway was on the hot seat and might not finish out the week with the way things were going in Queens.
But that was before his Mets swept the Washington Nationals in a four-game series, making it hard for Nats ownership and front office to stay the course and keep manager Dave Martinez around, whose talented club has a 19-31 record and is 9.5 games out of the NL East.
His tirade from today's game that led to his ejection might very well be the last thing he does as the skipper of the Nats.
If it's not, it should be. Martinez can't control injuries, which Washington has had plenty of in the early going of 2019, but he has no excuse for his team being 12 games under .500 and likely out of contention before June. Not with the three starters at the top of his rotation.
Martinez is a smart baseball man, but when he took over a 97-win team, they finished with just 82 wins last year. So far this season, they are on track to lose around 100 games. He has talent, but for whatever reason they haven't played well under Martinez.
You can't get rid of all the players, so the logical move is to fire the manager. They've already let go of their pitching coach, Derek Lilliquist, so this wouldn't be out of the ordinary for Washington this year.
