The NBA is seeking new ways to keep fans interested during what is a long regular season and a postseason that doesn't seem to matter until the final four teams square off.

That is why the league's proposed rule changes have come up and now appear to be onto the next step of seeking approval from teams.

These proposed changes have produced polarizing reactions on social media. The main rule bringing out the hot takes is the in-season tournament. Fans seem concerned about more seemingly meaningless games being played, but it actually sounds exciting.

Such a tournament allows teams at the bottom of the standing to compete for a title when the NBA Finals are not a realistic goal. Top teams may rest star players during the tournament and it would create an environment where a team like the Knicks could actually take down a team like the Lakers or Bucks if top players are held out.

There is also the incentive of $1 million for the champions. To guys like LeBron James, that may not sound like that big of a deal, but to other players in the league, that's a prize worth competing for, without a doubt.

The play-in tournament for the bottom seeds in the postseason adds even more excitement. Teams who likely won't make it far in the postseason can have a championship-like atmosphere in April. That is something fans should be able to get behind.

More competitiveness during the NBA regular season is needed and Adam Silver knows that. The grind of an 82-game season can get repetitive, and adding an in-season tournament as well as play-in games could make things enticing throughout the year.
