NBA Twitter Destroying RJ Barrett Over Bad Summer League is Embarrassing
By Brian Cass
When it comes to rookie NBA players participating in the Summer League, most are just trying to get their feet wet to get ready for their first season in the pros. After the New York Knicks missed out on every marquee free agent this offseason, the pressure on No. 3 overall pick RJ Barrett grew exponentially.
All eyes will be on him this upcoming season as the Knicks try to climb their way back into relevance. He's been playing in the Summer League along with his fellow rookies, and although expectations are high, he's struggled in his first two outings. And as is the usual case with NBA Twitter, everyone is overreacting to this youngster's early troubles.
It seems like every Knicks fan has rushed to their keyboards to express their concerns with Barrett. It's been a tough road for the New York faithful, so we can understand why they're being so boisterous about Barrett. But, giving him all this slack on top of the pressure he'll already face as a rookie will benefit no one.
The NBA is one of the toughest leagues for rookies to thrive in. It's not like the NFL where we see several rookies impact their teams in year one, we usually only see a handful of NBA rookies have success.
Not to mention the fact that Barrett only spent one year at Duke and is still just 19. The lofty expectations are a lot to throw on someone who is still in his teens.
Knicks fans need to wait a whole lot longer before they call Barrett a bust, no one's career has ever been defined after two Summer League games. His potential is through the roof, so let's all pump the brakes a bit and let the kid develop into the All-Star most NBA pundits projected him to be.
