The baseball world stood still in fear Sunday night after learning out that former Boston Red Sox slugger and future Hall of Famer David Ortiz was shot point-blank in the back in his hometown of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

There has been news circulating that suggests that the attack was premeditated. According to the latest as-yet-unconfirmed reports out of the Dominican, friends warned Ortiz that his wellbeing was at risk earlier Sunday morning.

Ortiz was allegedly meeting a woman, who was the wife of a Dominican Republic drug lord. According to Dominican authorites, the drug lord found out about Ortiz's whereabouts, and hired two gunmen to shoot the Red Sox legend.

To be clear, no other news outlets have confirmed the claims made by Dominican Republic police and Ortiz's representatives as of this writing.

Ortiz is in stable condition following emergency surgery, during which doctors removed his gallbladder and part of his colon in order to control bleeding. Ortiz was flown back to Boston by the Red Sox organization on Monday in order to receiver further treatment.

Again, this latest reporting has not yet been confirmed as of this writing. But rest assured that we'll learn more about this story in the coming days.
