New Report Reveals Miami Hurricanes Football Has a Partying Problem and Nobody is Surprised
By Sam Dunn
Miami nightlife is undefeated. It was true when Jimmy Johnson's Hurricanes teams ushered in the era of "The U" in a wave of brazen excess, it was true when LeBron took his talents to South Beach, and it's true now. And though the Canes have lacked the championship luster that once made them the preeminent college football program in America, the debauchery and bacchanal that make up a substantial portion of their brand is alive and well.
According to a new report from the Miami Herald, there are a few too many players in Coral Gables more interested in partying than making the necessary sacrifices to become great on the football field.
To be fair, this just can't be considered a shocker. It cannot. This is the University of Miami, the program that counted 2 Live Crew's Uncle Luke among its most adoring superfans (and super-impermissible financial supporters). The most frustrating aspect of the report, however, is that this epidemic of hedonism has spread to UM's quarterback room.
That sad fact may as well be a death sentence for Manny Diaz's program in the here and now. A team with irresponsible, selfish quarterbacks is authentically going nowhere fast.
The Herald describes instances of players breaking curfew, freelancing istead of abiding by play calls, missing crucial practices, and a general lack of discipline and determination. If there's one player who ends up looking the worst in all this, it's QB Jarren Williams, who's isn't made out to be a guy who listens intently or respects the authority of Diaz and the Canes' coaching staff.
After going scoreless in the Independence Bowl against Louisiana Tech, Miami finished Diaz's first season at the helm with a 6-7 record. Things can absolutely get worse in Coral Gables before they get better -- the first order of business will be to lock down a grad transfer quarterback to help settle down all this noise in the system, and fast.
