New York Daily News Back Page Trolls Red Sox Into Oblivion After MLB's Pathetic Punishment for Cheating Scandal
By Adam Weinrib
Since the city of Boston's not legally allowed to be sad about sports for more than 24 hours, it was beyond assured that the 2018 Red Sox would get off light in their alleged cheating scandal.
On Wednesday, the final word dropped -- Boston's replay room coordinator was the fall guy (sad!), and Alex Cora was only suspended through 2020 for spearheading Houston's scheme (and can make a grand reentrance next year). Makes sense to me! People usually cheat in one city, win a title, move to another city immediately, DON'T cheat, and win again. That's how it works.
The New York Daily News got on board with toasting the Red Sox, too, in the wake of this snoozy non-news.
So good! So good! So good!
Per the official report, Boston's 2018 success involved a video room coordinator using his vantage point to tweak his own reports on potential signs mid-game. Basically, the team was working off scouting reports and amending them with information they shouldn't have had.
Yeah, but there's no way something more was going on. It's very normal to win 108 games one season and 84 the next with the same cast of characters. Super normal.
Whether the Red Sox outright cheated or not, I think we can all agree that leadership, and the players, knew a non-zero amount about their rogue video employee's behavior. At a certain point, these scandals shouldn't be measured by, "Are you the Astros or not?" No one's the Astros. That doesn't mean this isn't misbehaving.
