New York Daily News Gets Destroyed for Controversial Eli Manning Take
By Scott Rogust
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning is a very sensitive topic in the New York/New Jersey Metropolitan area. He's got his supporters, some in the form of owner John Mara and general manager Dave Gettleman, as well as his critics, those who believe the quarterback's leash is much too long given his play in recent years.
But things have been taken to the next level, thanks to a local newspaper.
Mike Lupica of the New York Daily News published an opinion piece in which he explains why Manning is the most important Giant in franchise history.
That's right. Not Lawrence Taylor, arguably the best pass rusher in NFL history, or legendary quarterbacks Frank Gifford or Phil Simms. Those are Lupica's words, as he firmly believes that Manning is the Derek Jeter of the Giants.
Of course, in the social media era of sports, the comments were flowing like water from a sink faucet.
A simple GIF of generational linebacker and WrestleMania XI main eventer, Lawrence Taylor.
Oh, and the countless Taylor GIFs doing what he did best: get to the quarterback.
Some found it funny.
And even some former NFLers weighed in.
We'd put money on the amount of people who had a similar reaction to this.
Fans didn't forget the impact Michael Strahan and Bill Parcells had on the franchise.
Even Buffalo Bills fans stuck their head in this debate. If you don't know the name Scott Norwood, just Google it.
While Lupica makes his case for Manning being the face of the entire Giants organization, he doesn't gloss over the fact that his decline in play the past two years have overshadowed his two Super Bowl runs.
Eli Manning is a very divisive figure in New York Giants lore. Some want to see him play well in the final year of his contract, while others are clamoring for rookie Daniel Jones to take over the reins already.
