New York Mets to Hire Luis Rojas as New Manager
By Scott Rogust
The New York Mets had the unenviable task of looking for a managerial replacement for Carlos Beltran with only a few weeks to go before Spring Training. But, after an internal scope, the Metropolitans now have their guy.
According to general manager Brodie Van Wagenen, the Mets are finalizing a multi-year deal with Luis Rojas to become the team's new manager.
The newest manager of the Mets is also the son of the legendary Felipe Alou, and brother of Moises. That has to count for something, right?
New York didn't explore any outside options for a new skipper this time around, focusing their search instead on Rojas, Hensley Meulens and Tony DeFrancesco. With Rojas getting the job, the coaching staff assembled under Beltran will remain intact.
The Mets were put in a serious bind, as Major League Baseball's investigation on the Houston Astros listed Beltran as a key figure in the team's "player-driven" sign-stealing scheme. With AJ Hinch and Alex Cora swiftly losing their managerial jobs, Beltran was dismissed days later.
Rojas was originally hired as the team's quality control coach. He previously spent time as manager of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies from 2017-18. In that tenure, he was held in high regard by top players like Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeill, and Dominic Smith.
Considering he had the support of the Mets' young stars, Rojas was an easy hire for the team, as they look to move on from the Beltran scandal and compete for the NL East crown in 2020.
