Yankees Reportedly Scouted Henderson Alvarez Amid Pitching Woes
By Brendan Balsamo
In 2013, on the last day of the season, Henderson Alvarez threw a no-hitter. He was an All-Star the very next year, and his star was ever-rising. However, after starting for Miami Marlins on Opening Day in 2015, the rest of his year was ravaged by a shoulder injury, and he just hasn't been able to return to form since.
Now down in Florida with a KBO team after last pitching in Mexico with the Tigres de Quintana Roo, Alvarez is using Twitter to try and make his comeback known. According to The Athletic's Marc Carig, one of Alvarez's recent throwing sessions was scouted by multiple MLB teams, including the New York Yankees.
The Yankees could use the rotation help, as their starters have struggled to stay healthy. Luis Severino is out for all of 2020 after getting Tommy John surgery and James Paxton is out for the first month of the regular season after getting back surgery. The fifth spot in the rotation is wide open, and although they have explored internal solutions, Alvarez could be an answer if none of them work out.
Alvarez has been consistently posting videos of himself pitching on Twitter, attempting to catch the attention of a team willing to buy into a comeback bid.
Alvarez at his peak was an elite pitcher. Hopefully, for his sake and the sake of the game, he can show us the kind of play that generated so much buzz a half-dozen years ago.
