Roger Goodell Has Given No Though to Retirement Much to the Disgust of NFL Fans Everywhere
By Scott Rogust
One of the many traditions of Super Bowl Week is NFL commissioner Roger Goodell's annual "state of the league" press conference.
While meeting with the media on Wednesday down in Miami, Goodell was asked if he had any plans on the horizon about retiring. Goodell said quite directly that he's "100% committed" to his role and hasn't considered stepping aside.
That noise you heard was a collective scream from football fans far and wide.
This is a far cry from what Goodell said back in 2017. At that time, he hinted at retirement by the conclusion of his current contract, which expires in 2024.
Additionally, he stressed the importance of developing a succession plan if he were leaning towards stepping away as commissioner at the end of his deal. He's yet to make such a decision.
Goodell, now 60 years old, has quite a bit to do in the near future. The ongoing collective bargaining agreement negotiations are of the utmost importance, considering owners are pushing for a 17-game regular season, much to the dismay of the NFL Players Association. Goodell has to do his best to avoid a work stoppage like the league had back in 2011.
Sorry, NFL fans, this man is going to be around for at least the next four years.
