3 Draft Day Trade Scenarios 49ers Should Consider
By Michael Luciano
The San Francisco 49ers, reigning champs of the NFC, have two first round picks in the 2020 NFL draft, as the recent DeForest Buckner deal netted them pick No. 13 in addition to the 31st pick they already owned. Unfortunately, past moves like trading for Dee Ford and the now-departed Emmanuel Sanders have left the 49ers without second-, third-, or fourth-round picks. The 49ers have holes at wide receiver, cornerback, and defensive tackle that need addressing, but they won't be able to address them unless they acquire some extra picks. With that in mind, here's how GM John Lynch and Co. can proceed.
3. Add Multiple 3rd-Round Picks and Take a Wide Receiver
The 2020 wide receiver class is legendarily deep, as there are late Day 2 and early Day 3 prospects that could immediately seize a starting role. Kyle Shanahan is such a creative offensive mind that any wide receiver who is on the 49ers for 15 minutes practically becomes a master at separating at the line of scrimmage. In need of another receiver to compliment Deebo Samuel, the 49ers can scoop up a couple of deep threats in the middle rounds -- like South Carolina's Bryan Edwards -- provided they trade back.
2. Trade No. 31 and Grab a Defensive Lineman in Round 2
Derrick Brown and Javon Kinlaw are the top two defensive tackles in this draft, and the second tier is populated by a host of former Big 12 stars. TCU's Ross Blacklock, Oklahoma's Neville Gallimore, and Baylor's James Lynch all offer great value in the late first and early second rounds. In trading the 31st overall pick, the 49ers could hang on to No. 13 in this scenario while also recouping an extra second-rounder to beef up the defensive line and a mid-round pick to invest in a quality depth piece.
1. Trade No. 13 and Take an Elite Corner
After Ohio State's Jeff Okudah, the CB2 race was a bit of a mess for most of the pre-draft process. However, Florida cornerback CJ Henderson and LSU corner Kristian Fulton appear to be two cover guys that have separated from the rest of the pack. The No. 13 pick will command a major return in any sort of trade, as the 49ers could load up on selections in this draft or next year's by moving down. One of these two players are likely to be available at the end of the first round, and either one of them could make a terrific addition to the San Francisco secondary.
