2021 NFL Salary Cap Increase Will Be a Savior for the Cowboys Amid Contract Negotiation Stalemates
By Brady Williams
This year's batch of quarterback free agents is nearly unprecedented in the National Football League. With the futures of stars like Tom Brady and Philip Rivers now up in the air, some of the younger guys have fallen under the radar -- it's easy to forget that Dak Prescott just set career bests in passing yards and touchdowns and is angling for a long-term contract extension before his scheduled free agency a year from now. And while no progress has been reported as of this time, the NFL's expected salary cap threshold for the 2021 season will surely make negotations a little easier in Big D.
According to Matt Verderame of FanSided, in the salary cap could rise all the way to $240 million in 2021, up from an estimated $200 million this year and $188.2 million in 2019. The move would free up space for some blockbuster deals.
After Ezekiel Elliot's concerning holdout last year, the Cowboys have likely learned that they need to use a bit more finesse when dealing with their superstars. While Prescott has had bouts of inconsistency in his career, he still threw for nearly 5,000 yards this season. He's their best option, but handcuffing themselves to a too-long contract worth far more money than a player of Prescott's caliber is truly worth presents costs of its own.
That's why it's crucial for Dallas to have as much breathing room against the cap as possible. With that in mind, they could be uniquely suited to take advantage of the 2021 league year.
Jerry Jones has frequently shown that he isn't afraid to make a statement by splashing the cash. Being allowed even more freedom to do so would make the next few years a lot less stressful.
