VIDEO: NFL Stars Implore League to Condemn Racism and Support Player Protests in Powerful New Clip
The NFL has not made a strong, sincere, introspective statement following the death of George Floyd and the subsequent protests that have taken hold across the world. The league and its owners notably blackballed Colin Kaepernick following his peaceful protests against police brutality and racial oppression, and would look awfully hypocritical speaking against such societal problems without also righting that wrong. With this in mind video dropped Thursday night that features stars from all over the NFL calling for the league release a strong statement condemning racism, and institutionalized violence and oppression against black people in this country -- and also for an endorsement of the players' right to protest.
None of the things mentioned in the video are controversial at all. Star players like Patrick Mahomes, Odell Beckham Jr., Deshaun Watson, Ezekiel Elliott, and Saquon Barkley are among those to appear in the video to make reasonable demands for a league that stifled peaceful protests just a few years ago.
So far, official statements from the league and its teams have been full of platitudes and PR-speak, repeatedly sidestepping language that calls out police violence against black Americans.
A boilerplate statement on Twitter is not enough. Coming out and directly supporting players and their right to protest peacefully would go a long way in making the league united against racism and systemic oppression. The NFL could take a hint from the NBA to see the benefits of letting their players speak out and be voices of change in the country.
This video featuring so many stars with significant platforms will hopefully cause owners and those at the league office to wake up and take another crack at coming to grips with what's going on in America today.
