NFL Writer is Getting Blasted for His Response to Black Athletes Getting Upset With Drew Brees
By Jerry Trotta
NBC Sports columnist Peter King is one of the NFL's most esteemed writers. His weekly "Football Morning in America" piece often provides comprehensive insight and intriguing interviews on trending storylines from the previous seven days.
However, that wasn't at all the case this week.
In King's latest edition of FMIA, he bizarrely compared African American athletes that were enraged by Drew Brees' polarizing comments about players kneeling during the National Anthem to savages from popular novel "Lord of the Flies."
As King notes, "In that book, normal British boys get stranded on a desert island and have to fend for themselves and they spiral into savagery to survive. Sounds about right."
Well, you can go ahead an add this to the list of alarming tone-deaf comments that have surfaced in light of the protests against racial oppression that are still sweeping our nation. Though black athletes made up the majority of the critique, the shade thrown the New Orleans Saints quarterback's way wasn't at all pigeon-holed to that demographic. There's no counting how many pundits (of all races) came forward and slammed Brees last week.
Comparing the outcry that resulted from Brees' interview with Yahoo Finance to starved savages -- who were also adolescents, by the way -- from a fictitious novel is so insensitive that it's borderline offensive. The fact that King also uses a sarcastic tone while mentioning African American's will to survive, or overcome systemic racism, is very disturbing.
You can bet that Pro Football Talk's public relations team has been made aware of these comments and is preparing a damage control statement.
