Nick Saban Releases Strong Statement After Death of George Floyd and Recent Protests
The death of George Floyd and the protests that have followed are at the forefront of our society's conversation right now. The scary aftershock has led many prominent individuals in the sporting world to share their own thoughts and statements.
Alabama head coach Nick Saban was quiet throughout the week, but released a strong statement Sunday evening.
Saban mentioned not only Floyd, but also Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, who also tragically lost their lives due to senseless violence. Some of Saban's words may come off as boilerplate, yet there is nothing inherently bad about what he said. He is promoting unity, and that is a noble sentiment.
He certainly could've stayed silent and privileged, after all.
Parents of top recruits trust Saban to be a positive mentor and role model. Young African-American men look up to him when joining the Crimson Tide program, and Saban simply could not stay silent on the situation surrounding Floyd. His statement preaches peace, and will hopefully convince some with existing prejudices to look in the mirror and make some changes.
