NL Starters Revealed for 2019 MLB All-Star Game
By Scott Rogust
The MLB All-Star voting period for 2019 has come to it's conclusion, and the National League starting roster has been set.
Willson Contreras, Freddie Freeman, Ketel Marte, Nolan Arenado, Javier Baez, Christian Yelich, Cody Bellinger, and Ronald Acuna Jr. will all represent Team NL at Progressive Field in Cleveland, Ohio on July 9.
C: Willson Contreras
The catcher for the Chicago Cubs held off stiff competition from Brian McCann and Yasmani Grandal to earn the starter's role. This season, Willson Contreras is batting .300 with 17 home runs and 48 RBI.
1B: Freddie Freeman
The veteran face of the Atlanta Braves no doubt earned his spot in the starting lineup, as he's currently batting .313, while mashing 21 homers and 61 RBI. Josh Bell had a late surge in votes, but it was not to be. The one saving grace for the Pirate is that he'll surely earn a spot on the team as a reserve.
2B: Ketel Marte
While not the most recognizable name on the ballot, you can't take away what the Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman has done this year. Ketel Marte's already has career numbers before the All-Star Break, posting a .316 batting average and 20 dingers, with 51 runs batted in.
3B: Nolan Arenado
To the surprise of no one, Nolan Arenado blew the competition out of the water, garnering over 50-percent of the vote. Currently slashing .317/.381/.572, Arenado helped the Colorado Rockies bounce back from their dreadful start to the season. Josh Donaldson and Kris Bryant stood no shot, based off the number of votes tallied in their favor.
SS: Javier Baez
Javier Baez will be tagging along with teammate Willson Contreras in Cleveland. Baez leads the Cubs team with 91 hits, while mashing 19 home runs and knocking in 52 runs. The do-it-all infielder has become a popular figure in the league, and it's no surprise that he received the starting nod at shortstop.
OF: Christian Yelich
The reigning, defending, undisputed National League MVP is heading to his second-consecutive All-Star Game. Considering he leads the entire league with 29 homers on the year, Christian Yelich's addition shouldn't come as a shock.
OF: Cody Bellinger
Then, there's the man who's giving Yelich a run for his money for the NL MVP award later this year, Cody Bellinger. The third-year youngster started off his 2019 campaign on a torrid pace, as he owns the MLB lead in batting average (.354), on-base percentage (.452), and OPS (1.163). Bellinger's spot on Team NL was a forgone conclusion ever since the ballots opened.
OF: Ronald Acuña Jr.
Major League Baseball's 2018 NL Rookie of the Year, Ronald Acuña Jr. is heading to his first-ever All-Star Game. The "Pheñon" currently has 19 homers and 51 RBI to his credit on a .287 batting average. The 21-year-old is going to bring the energy to the National League squad.
