Odell Beckham Jr. Made a Great Point About Violence Around Country
By Michael Luciano
The death of George Floyd has led to protests across the country, many of which remained peaceful demonstrations. However acts of vandalism, violence and looting have been interspersed within these protests, making it difficult for some to fully back them.
Cleveland Browns wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. agrees fully with the motives behind these protests, but thinks that those who muddy the meaning of the protests by turning violent are being counter-productive, as he claims that "violence will only bring more violence."
Beckham isn't exactly wrong. Trying to combat excessive violence and police misconduct by being violent and committing crime helps no one. Protesting peacefully, however, is a much more productive use of time, as it gives the protest more meaning and credibility.
Beckham's thoughts have been echoed by many local and national politicians, including Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, who urged the protestors to keep things muted and peaceful.
Even when it comes to situations as nebulous and hard to pin down as horrific, systemic racism and police brutality, the solution probably lies somewhere in the middle ground between doing nothing and meeting violence with more violence. Beckham is advocating for peaceful ways to come about uniting together, which is as levelheaded a response as one could hope for.
