Mike Gundy's Lame Attempt at Apology for Dangerously Irresponsible Coronavirus Remarks Changes Nothing
By Scott Rogust

The coronavirus pandemic has given us all an opportunity to see as candidly as possible just who is taking the situation seriously and who's resigned to selfish behavior that potentially puts individuals at risk. Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy proved to be the latter, as he expressed his desire to have his players return to campus on May 1 because they have "stronger immune systems" and they need to "pump money back into the state of Oklahoma."
What?
Gundy was rightly ripped apart for his tone-deaf comments, and on Saturday, the mullet-sporting Cowboys head coach released an apology. Unfortunately, it was a weak effort.

So, it took Gundy four days to realize that his comments "have offended some." That's some great awareness from a millionaire college football coach who wields tremendous influence as a public figure.
Gundy may have felt that releasing this statement of contrition, however mild, would help lessen the damage he's already inflicted. Yeah, that's not happening. Gundy let it be known to future high school recruits that the game will inevitably be more important than one's well-being.
Good luck trying to sell that to the parents of up-and-coming recruits.
Parents be aware of who is coaching your child. Mike Gundy is just one of hundreds of coaches who really don’t care about your child. It’s all conditional love. He showed his true colors. pic.twitter.com/DbPAB7ieH5

Even though COVID-19 is more dangerous to the elderly, young people can still transmit the disease to others, whether to teammates, coaches, family members, or total strangers. As statistics prove, the coronavirus doesn't respect borders or boundaries of any kind. Sadly, these details are lost on Gundy. He wants to get in practices in order to gear up for a regular season that may or may not happen. As Dr. Anthony Fauci says, the virus determines the timeline to return to normalcy, not the individual.
Especially not a college football coach.
Gundy may want us to think he's sorry and that he realizes he was wrong, but it's going to be hard to convince the masses that he's being genuine.
