Lane Kiffin Has the Right Attitude About COVID-19 and Dabo Swinney Could Learn a Lesson
By Scott Rogust
The coronavirus pandemic has halted the sports world, and for good reason. Social distancing and self-isolation is helping slow down the spread of the invisible enemy. it's unfortunate, however, that some high-profile aren't taking the threat of COVID-19 as seriously as they ought. Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney sadly fits into that category, and in order to set the right exampe, he should take notes from Ole Miss boss Lane Kiffin.
The often-quirky head coach was recently interviewed by ESPN's Paul Finebaum, and expressed his belief that the well-being of players and coaches is far more important than preseason practices, and that there are a lot of things in life more important than football.
“You know, as bad as it is, for most of us, there’s a lot of worse things that can be going on,” Kiffin said, via 247Sports. “People are losing loved ones daily, so the fact that we don’t have football practice, can’t work with our players and may have some games pushed back really isn’t a big deal, in the big picture of things.”
This is the mindset that big-time coaches likee Swinney and Mike Gundy should be adopting. instead, the Clemson boss blatantly ignored the advice of global medical experts by taking a family vacation to Florida, and claimed he'd do so again during the current Easter holiday weekend. Swinney didn't do himself any favors by suggesting that people will hate anything he does, which is downright tone-deaf and doesn't explain away a single decision he's made.
Kiffin said that losing practices and camp is no big deal, because every other football program will be on the same boat. More importantly, he stated that if everyone continues to embrace social distancing directives, the possibility of playing out the 2020 season grows more probable.
It feels like basic stuff, but given all the misinformation and misplaced bluster out there, Kiffin's steady outlook is incredibly refreshing.
We're living through a very serious, consequential time in our history, and we all have to get on the same page to help turn the tide against the COVID-19 pandemic. Listen to what Lane Kiffin is saying, football fans! Stay at home as much as possible. Keep your distance from others. Wash those hands. The more we stick to the recommendations of the experts, the quicker we can return to our normal lives and get back to watching college football this fall.
