The One Contract Holding Back the Philadelphia Eagles
By Michael Luciano
The Philadelphia Eagles have a quarterback in place in Carson Wentz, a solid defense, and a quality head coach in Doug Pederson. There aren't many open wounds on this roster Howie Roseman has constructed, but Alshon Jeffery is one of them.
Not only did Jeffery manage just 490 yards last year, but he is the sole owner of the worst contract on the team by a country mile.
Jeffery signed a four-year, $52 million contract with the Eagles, but he has failed to live up to WR1 billing, instead allowing Zach Ertz to usurp him as Wentz's favorite target. Using three separate draft picks on speedy wide receivers in this draft, including first-round pick Jalen Reagor, indicates that if Philly could, they would move off of Jeffery and rely on younger, more explosive players.
Unfortunately, Jeffery accounts for $26 million in dead cap this year and $10 million the year after, meaning that the Eagles are in a sense stuck with Jeffery soaking up a good deal of cap space. That one big free agent signing that turns the Eagles into true Super Bowl contenders might not be able to be properly compensated by the Eagles due to Jeffery's deal.
There is no reason for Alshon to stick around in Philadelphia given what a poor fit he is in the locker room and in Pederson's offense. Unfortunately, the Eagles are stuck with No. 17, which could make for a messy end to his Philly tenure.
