The One Contract Holding Back the Washington Redskins

As the Redskins continue to rebuild their roster to become relevant in NFC East again, there's one contract that can become a problem as the team moves forward.

During the 2019 offseason, Washington dished out $84 million over six years to make Landon Collins the highest-paid safety in the NFL. At the time it was bold move, but fans were happy because they stole a star from their rivals, the New York Giants.

Collins was supposed to step in and immediately add a playmaking presence to the Redskins defense, but that was far from the case. Per Pro Football Focus, Collins had his worst season since his rookie year and Washington stumbled to a 3-13 record.

Fast forward to this season, and Collins has a cap hit of over $14 million and is the Redskins' highest-paid defensive player. And he'll have cap hits of at least $15 million for the rest of his blockbuster contract.

Giving all this money to a safety can prove costly, considering the Redskins have many more needs across their roster. To make this deal worth it for Washington, Collins will have to turn back the clock to his 2016 and 2017 seasons, during which he had a combined eight forced turnovers.

We're not saying Collins isn't capable of doing that, we're just saying it was an oversight on the Redskins' part to give such a huge contract to a defensive player who doesn't have much of an opportunity to impact the game given the limitations of his position.
