One Surprise Cut the Green Bay Packers Could Still Make This Offseason
By Michael Luciano
The Green Bay Packers seem like they have their 53-man roster mostly set after handing out some big contracts in free agency over the last few years and amassing plenty of draft picks in 2019 and 2020, but one former fourth-round pick could be on his way out.
Matt LaFleur and GM Brian Gutekunst could be temped to part ways with running back Jamaal Williams, who is a free agent at the end of this season, given who they added in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Williams might have accounted for 700 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns last year, but Aaron Jones' breakout season and LaFleur's tendency to lean on one running back as a bell cow, like he did with Derrick Henry and Todd Gurley, means that Williams probably isn't going to see a ton of snaps next year.
The selection of Boston College running back AJ Dillon, a 250-pound bruiser with speed in the open field, in the second round of the Draft, means that Williams will have to scrap and claw for any shred of playing time he gets this year.
The Packers are probably going to do everything they can to keep Jones in town, and Dillon figures to be a quality change of pace back for the next few years. That leaves Williams as the odd man out, as Green Bay might decide he isn't worth retaining if he is going to play a limited amount of snaps.
