One Surprise Cut the Philadelphia Eagles Could Still Make This Offseason
By Thomas Carannante
Will this happen? Probably not, but if tensions boil over, the Philadelphia Eagles might not have a choice.
Veteran wide receiver Alshon Jeffery has been a massive disappointment for the most part ever since signing a big four-year extension with the team. On top of that, he's rumored to be the locker room troublemaker who's been throwing Carson Wentz under the bus -- though those are merely reports and speculation.
But if we combine those two factors, and the Eagles view him as a detriment to the team's chemistry, it wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility for general manager Howie Roseman to cut Jeffery loose if he can't find a trade partner for the wide receiver.
Then, when you add in the fact that it's clear the Eagles are going with a whole different look on the wide receiver front, it's becoming more evident Jeffery might not fit in.
Sure, this release wouldn't be ideal considering Jeffery carries a bit over $26 million in dead money, but the Eagles backloaded his contract (he's making $15 million this year and $18 million next year), so this is a reality fans will have to live with. Whether they release him this year or next, this is a sunk cost, plain and simple, so timing doesn't really matter.
It's likely the Eagles give Jeffery one more year to try and turn things around (presuming his foot injury is healed by Week 1), because they need the veteran wideout experience, and are stuck with his contract, unless they find a team willing to take on the risk. All things considered, don't rule out Roseman ripping the band-aid off and getting this over with as soon as possible.
