One Surprise Cut the Bears Could Still Make This Offseason
By Michael Luciano
Division II Ashland University might not be the football powerhouse that the Chicago Bears thought it could be, as they have been underwhelmed by the performance of second-round tight end Adam Shaheen.
With Matt Nagy and Ryan Pace both destined for the chopping block if the 2020 season starts to go off the rails, they need to get rid of some of the dead weight from a disappointing 2019 campaign, and Shaheen could be the first to go.
Shaheen has recorded just 14 catches over the last two seasons, as he was the second or third tight end in a Nagy offense that loves to rely on one tight end sets. it looks like he lacks the athleticism and speed to stick in the pros.
The Bears already used another second-round pick on a tight end to replace him, as they drafted Notre Dame's Cole Kmet in the 2020 NFL Draft. Considering this selection and the contract given out to Jimmy Graham, Shaheen might not be back in 2020.
The jump from D-II to the NFL is as cavernous as the Grand Canyon, and the Bears found that out when they drafted Shaheen as early as they did, only to be disappointed with the production he would provide. Their best bet is to move forward with Kmet and Graham while washing their hands of Shaheen.
