One Surprise Cut the Los Angeles Rams Could Still Make This Offseason
By Jerry Trotta

The surprise release of running back Todd Gurley earlier this offseason proved that the Los Angeles Rams aren't afraid to cut bait with anyone. In terms of salvaging cap space, the Rams need to press the issue because they have just $2.38 million to work with, which ranks 29th in the NFL.
You have to think that general manager Les Snead is meticulously plotting ways to save as much money as possible. Conveniently enough for the the 49-year-old exec, a temporary solution would be cutting offensive tackle Rob Havenstein.

Havenstein is their second-round pick from 2015.
The Rams signed Havenstein, their 2015 second-round pick, to a four-year, $32.5 million contract extension prior to the 2018 season. However, the franchise is quickly realizing that might've been a mistake as it restructured his deal in April to create some flexibility for the incoming draft class.
Pro Football Focus gave Havenstein a woeful 50.8 grade for his efforts last season. The 28-year-old conceded five sacks and committed eight penalties. To think that he will account for a grand total of $23.4 million in cap hits through the 2022 campaign should scare the living daylights out of Snead.

The Rams drafted OL Bobby Evans (third round) and David Edwards (fifth round) in 2019. They also spent a seventh-rounder on Clemson guard Tremayne Anchrum this year. If Los Angeles feels that it has enough depth up front, the organization would be better off owning up to the fact that giving Havenstein that pricey of a contract was a mistake.
