Orioles Players Are Sporting Hilarious Shirts in Support of Steve Wilkerson
By Michael Luciano
Looks like the Orioles finally stumbled upon a closer. He was just disguised as a slap-hitting outfielder this entire time.
Baltimore and their historically bad starting rotation have been the dictionary definition of unwatchable outside of All-Star John Means. With Mychal Givens removed from the closer role, their bullpen is just as bad, if not worse. However, they might have found their next relief ace in outfielder Stevie Wilkerson, who has only surrendered one run and two hits in four innings of relief work. Orioles players are trying to get Wilkerson on the mound more often with custom shirts saying "Let Stevie Pitch."
Wilkerson is only hitting .228 with eight home runs and a 77 OPS+ in 75 games this season, so he's actually had an easier go of it pitching.
Wilkerson specializes in the eephus, as very few, if any, of his lobs to home plate cross 60 miles per hour. When he became the first position player to record a save, he did so on 14 straight junk balls that topped out at 58 miles per hour.
The Orioles are aren't contending, and Wilkerson has shown he can get somehow hitters out at this level, so why not throw him in as a pitcher more often? Maybe it'll get some more butts in seats in the ghost town that Camden Yards has become.
