Orioles' Trey Mancini Releases Heartfelt Statement Following Worrisome Report About His 'Medical Issue'
By Scott Rogust
Baltimore Orioles fans were given rough news on Saturday, after finding out that outfielder Trey Mancini left the team and required a "non-baseball medical procedure." The team provided very little additional detail, which caused many in the baseball world to express their concern over Mancini's well-being.
When the O's relative silence was paired with Alex Cobb's ominous comments, the MLB world began to truly worry.
On Sunday afternoon, Mancini released an official statement on his Twitter account, expressing his appreciation for the vast amount of support he received from his fans and teammates during this time. Mancini, however, didn't reveal any specifics in his tweet, but will keep everyone posted within the next week.
The one positive to take out of this is that Mancini sounds confident in his ability to return to the game he loves soon.
Mancini hadn't played in a game since last Monday due to an unspecified illness, and didn't participate in workouts earlier in Spring Training because of his health. The team is respecting their outfielder's privacy and allowing him to reveal the news once he's ready.
The Orioles were bottom-dwellers in the AL East in 2019, but Mancini proved to be the team MVP. In 154 games, Mancini hit 35 home runs and knocked in 97 RBI, while posting a .291 batting average, .364 on-base percentage, and .535 slugging percentage.
Mancini appears to be in good spirits, and that's due to the outpouring of support from his colleagues and baseball fans around the world. Hopefully, his health improves so we can see him take the field at Camden Yards in 2020.
